A Case Study in Censorship

I'm against censorship.

Sometimes, censorship can have adsurd (and funny) consquences.

Take the song "I still Will" by 50 Cent. Knowing 50 cent's public persona, I'll let you guess what the original song is called. (Hint: "I still K----")

Back to "I still Will", the title line "when I hit the block I will still chill." Ok, cool. It makes sense. Except that the beat is hard hitting. It's really ironic.

Plus, the rhyming scheme is f#$%ed up. "Lap" is rhymed that "that". Again, it's an ok fit, but it won't get you any dates.

On a final note, silencing one word is pretty lame. I would guess the majority of people guess what is silenced.

Sure, violence and sex in the media influence some people. However, so could tons of other things (for example, a car accident where there are no fatalities or permanent disabilities) Are we to ban driving? In short, the blanket censorship of certain ideas causes more harm to society than not allowing it.

Stupid Television Shows

This week: Hole in the Wall....

hahahaaha

What a stupid concept.

I can imagine the pitch: Great idea folks! We'll just push this wall with a tiny whole in it as watch as contestants-idiots, or idiots who want money- trying to get through the hole.

And what about the show Wipe-out.

In that one, we take pleasure in watching people getting creamed. And yet, we can't watch porn until we're eighteen. (records on file) What the...

I think President Bush watches both of these shows.

Hahahahahaha (jokes)

A Toronto T.V. news channel was going to commercial.

The announcer: "A federal election has been called. Up next, we will tell you when it will happen."

Cue Footage of the Prime Minister. Text on the screen says "Election set for Oct. 14"

Time to change the channel.

(Aprox. 5:30pm EST, today, on CP24)

Reflections on Outkast

I'm talking about Outkast, the band. You know, the one featuring Andre 3000 and Big Boi.

In no particular order:

Andree 3000 and Big Boi were musical Outkasts. They had a style that was cool. There style influenced psychedelics. They combined rock elements into hip-hop. These ideas were brought into bands like the Black-Eyed Peas and Linkin Park (with an emo twist).

The Black-Eyed Peas though, have disbanded- at least temporary. I'm not ruling out a comeback.

Linkin Park has faded out. By this I mean they have faded out of the mainstream.

So, what's precipitated this shift?

There is less money in music these days. Think about the itunes store. Music there is sold cheaper than traditionally. With good reason too, it's cheaper to sell online than with C.Ds. Plus P2P (Peer-to-Peer) file sharing is essential free. Plus, there are legal questions about P2P sharing as it relates to copyright. Is it legal or illegal? When is it illegal? Even if it's illegal, how do you get evidence?

I'm not going to say what I believe right now. Just trying to understand what the f#$% is going on.

Peace out.

Introducing: Shad!!

Welcome to London, Ontario- the home of up-and-coming hip-hop act Shad.

Shad has a cool song called "The Old Prince Still Lives at Home." The music video is a playful parody of the intro. to the old show "The Fresh Prince of Bel lair(sp?)" There is also a not-so-discrete hit on the struggle of being a underground artist-especially the cost.

"The Old Prince Still Lives at Home" music video.

(P.S. I'm not being paid for this promo-I can relate to poor artists (I am one). Also, I really like "The Old Prince Still Lives at Home.")

David Suzuki joke

The Globe and Mail features an article on environmentalist David Suzuki.

Unfortunately, the headline on the front page is well...rude:

" Suzuzuki seeks to lighten his load."

My advice: Go to a toilet. An eco-friendly one of course.

Pop Rap

This is a post critical of Pop Rap.

I define Pop Rap as rap with simple and or pointless lyrics. To me, this genre undermines what I enjoy in rap: the lyrics.

Take for example, take "In the Ayer", by Flo Rida ft. Will.i.am.

This is the chorus:

Oh hot damn , this is my jam
Keep me partying till the A.M
Yall don’t understand , make me throw my hands
In the ayer , ay , ayer , ayer , ay , ayer

I guess it's a party song, no? Still, what if the lyrics were replaced- would it make a difference?

My stuff:

Will.i.am., I hate spam
Keep me patring wit' Will.i.am
I understand, B.E.P., Da Band
In my i-pod, my, i-pod, i-pod, my, i-pod
